Unlicensed Movies 2011: 'Fast Five,' 'The Hangover Part II'
Searching to internet piracy just like any type of indication of movie quality won't enable you to get far -- it's type of like asking what is the most elegant boxed wine -- but 2011 would be a melting pot of tastes and preferences which, apparently, stretches to illegal movie installing, too. There is a movie about cars, a pal comedy having a chain-smoking monkey along with a hammer-carrying action flick from the director noted for his Shakespeare. At the forefront -- speeding out front, for a moment -- was 'Fast Five,' the 5th installment from the 'Fast and also the Furious' franchise. The Vin Diesel-brought action spectacle -- properly about stealing -- was unlawfully downloaded 9.3 million occasions. Following close behind were 'The Hangover Part II' and 'Thor,' the first kind which seemed to be properly about this list. In the end, a lot of its plot was stolen from the beginning. (Tip your waitress, folks!) James Franco's rock-climbing-disaster film '127 Hours' nabbed an unexpected place at number seven. Without doubt his performance finally year's Academy awards had something related to it (or possibly his 20 minute recorded reading through of Amie Barrodale's story "William Wei," for that uber-intelligent). However the most surprising? 2011's Best Picture 'The King's Speech,' which made over $414 million worldwide. Have a look in the other people who made the cut. 1. 'Fast Five' (Universal): $9.3 million 2. 'The Hangover Part II' (Warner Bros. / Legendary): $8.8 million 3. 'Thor' (Marvel/Vital): $8.3 million 4. 'Source Code' (Summit / Vendome): $7.9 million 5. 'I Am Number Four' (DreamWorks / Disney): $7.7 million 6. 'Sucker Punch' (Warner Bros. / Legendary): $7.two million 7. '127 Hours' (Fox Searchlight): $6.9 million 8. 'Rango' (Vital): $6.5 million 9. Ridley Scott on 'Prometheus': There Will Be No Xenomorphs
And the 'Prometheus' plot thickens. Ridley Scott's first sci-fi flick in three decades may be loosely tied to the 'Alien' franchise, but the director wants you to get one thing clear: There will not, under any circumstances, be xenomorphs (the creature from the 'Alien' movies) in 'Prometheus.' In an interview with Filmophilia, Scott revealed that his upcoming movie will not feature the famous extra-terrestrials Sigourney Weaver fought off for years. "No. Absolutely not. They squeezed it dry," admits Scott. "[The xenomorph] did very well. He survived, he's now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland, Jesus Christ!" In addition to 'Promtheus,' Ridley also discussed why he hasn't gone back to the science fiction in almost 30 years. I think one of the reasons why I've never gone back to science-fiction, even though I've often noodled around, thought about it, looked for story, looked for material, is that there's a nice purity to the original Alien. It's fairly pure. And ['Prometheus'] does actually raise all kinds of other questions, because if someone could, a being, could be as monstrously clever to create something like we experienced in the very first one -- I always figured it's a weapon, and I always figured that [the ship in the first 'Alien'] was a carrier of weapons. Therefore, who is that, inside that suit? That wasn't a skeleton, that was a suit. And if you open up the suit, what do you get inside it? And why were they going, where were they going? You can check out the entire interview over on Filmophilia. 'Prometheus,' which stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and Idris Elba, hits theaters June 8, 2012. 'Book of Mormon' Headed for Los Angeles Run in 2012
Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney rolled into town for his first major fundraiser Tuesday night, and the supporters he drew to the Beverly Hills Hotel was instructive on the nature of the GOP's support in monied Los Angeles.our editor recommendsDonald Trump's GOP Debate: Mitt Romney Becomes Third Candidate Who Won't Participate Mitt Romney and Fox News' Bret Baier Butt Heads Over Attack Ads (Video)Democrats Release 'Hollywood-Style' Ad Attacking Mitt Romney (Video)Mitt Romney's 2007 'Meet the Press' Appearance Provides Fodder for Newt Gingrich Campaign (Video) It also was Romney's first big chance to draw in Hollywood, but that didn't materialize. PHOTOS: 10 Hollywood Players That Will Make a Difference in the 2012 Elections While there's a smattering of industry conservatives -- like Terry Semel and Harry Sloan -- who support Romney, the event roster Tuesday evening was dominated by some of the city's top venture capitalists, hedge fund managers, private equity fund investors and others with longtime ties to Los Angeles' business community. The list of co-hosts -- obtained by The Hollywood Reporter -- was a bit like reviewing a list of the Westside's top ½ of the upper 1 percent. The Beverly Hills gala was chaired by Canyon Capital's Josh Friedman and his wife Beth; Tracy and Gene Sykes of Goldman Sachs; and long-time Los Angeles Music Center supporters Eva and Marc Stern, CEO of The TCW Group. PHOTOS: Democrats and Republicans' Favorite Movies Others co-hosting the event: Catherine and Bob Beyer, chairman of Chaparral Investments, a private equity fund; Jacquie and Harry McMahon, vice chairman of Merrill Lynch; Allison and Richard Roeder, venture capitalist with the Aurora Capital Group; Peter Starrett, chairman of Pacific Sunwear and founder of the Warner Bros. Studio stores, and his wife Cam, an advisor to the company that owns the Arclight and the Pacific theaters; former entertainment and media law attorney Mark Siegel, chairman of the J. Paul Getty Board of Trustees, and his wife Christina. Also on the list: Former European Union Ambassador Rockwell "Rock" Schnabel, co-founder of Trident Capital, and his wife Marna; Beny Alagem, owner of the Beverly Hilton Hotel, and his wife Adele; John Heubusch, executive director of the Reagan Library Foundation; Scott Honour, of the Gores Group, and his wife Jamie. Tickets to the Beverly Hills Hotel dinner were priced at $2,500 - the maximum an individual can contribute to a presidential candidate, but attendees also were given the opportunity to pledge to raise amounts ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 to support Romney's candidacy. The events biggest money raisers were invited to the nearby home of hosts Beth and Josh Friedman's for desert with the candidate, who spoke mostly about the economy and improving the nation's eduction system. (No one in the crowd asked Romney about hot-button social issues, like abortion, immigration and same-sex marriage, according to one attendee.) As former MGM chief-turned investor Sloan, one of the hosts of Tuesday's fundraiser, told The Hollywood Reporter that he is still hopeful that more people in Hollywood will come out in support of Romney. He is hoping to co-host an event in February that will at least give studio heads a chance to meet the candidate. While Romney's event wasn't the sort that brings out the paparazzi, it did bring in more than $1 million for his campaign - not a bad take on dinner and dessert. Guy Pearce Has an Interrogation Problem in the First Trailer For Lockout
When Luc Besson isn’t directing standing ovation-worthy biopics these days, the French filmmaker is busy co-writing action thrillers for his studio EuropaCorp to produce like Taken, Transporter, Colombiana and up next Lockout — the sci-fi adventure flick that sees Guy Pearce as a wrongly-accused government agent whose only shot at freedom comes at a very risky, space-age price. The price being that Pearce’s badass character — who refuses to wilt under Peter Stormare’s interrogation tactics in the above trailer — must rescue the President’s daughter from a space prison that has been overtaken by its own convicts. Judging from the preview, the gunfire-laden thriller features no less than three space crafts, two explosions, one highly choreographed bathtub stunt, a single escalator chase and three clever interrogation retorts from Pearce’s character (“People love me — just ask your wife.”) Lockout, co-written and co-directed by James Mather and Stephen St. Leger, arrives in theaters April 13. VERDICT: I’m all in for any film that combines brutal interrogation room violence with “your wife” jokes. [via /Film]

Gerard Butler on Rob Fiennes Like a Director: 'He's a Master'
Gerard Butler carrying a piece of equipment gun is not an unexpected -- he did star in 'Machine Gun Preacher' captured -- but his latest role like a soldier includes a twist: The film is modern-day however the dialogue is pure Shakespeare. Within the first large-screen adaptation of Shakepeare's play 'Coriolanus,' Butler plays the sworn enemy of Rob Fiennes's title character, until conditions forces Coriolanus to change sides and seek him out being an ally. Butler spoke to Moviefone about his history using this Shakespeare play and what Fiennes, who steps behind your camera the very first time, is much like like a director. People may be surprised to understand you've got a Shakespearean background. That's a fascinating story. The very first professional job I'd being an actor was 'Coriolanus.' I begged the director to allow me are available in and browse, and that i got the role. Even thought I had been only within the ensemble, I all of a sudden were built with a job being an actor also it was the most joyful moment of my existence. I Quickly was carrying out around the West Finish every evening and that i was thinking, "How did I recieve here? I'm an impostor." Cut to some couple of years later, there is a script looking at my desk and my agent informs me, "Ralph's known as a lot of occasions and he's desperate that you should play this role." And That I just thought, "My dear God!" It's type of an excellent yardstick for calculating your ability to succeed. The script was phenomenal, just removed lower superbly by John Logan, who authored 'Gladiator' and 'The Aviator.' That which was filming like? It had been an excellent experience. My first couple of days, I had been dealing with Vanessa Redgrave who had been giving a large speech and i believe which i observed the finest speech I have ever observed from an actress. It had been her carrying this out being an Oscar-winning performance. The film is very effective as well as as soon as. I have had the great fortune of seeing it tested before audiences also it goes lower bad weather and it is been superbly examined. How's Rob like a director? He's an expert. It had been his directorial debut but you've got a difficult time convincing me of this, since it felt like he was coming off movie number 50. He'd such charge of everything and particularly the performances. I felt liberated to do whatever I needed and completely supported. Since it would be a large deal, me dealing with a sizable Shakespeare role but I felt like I had been in incredibly confident, intelligent and appreciative hands. I understood whenever he walked in, his notes were very specific. Creatively I understood i was making something which really was likely to stick out. I saw the way in which he handled stars far more than myself like Redgrave and John Cox and also the respect that they for him. But Rob can also be among the best stars whatever person resided. So you are type of being handled all sides in the easiest way, both form a directorial and actor's perspective. He's this kind of knowledge of humanity, of culture, of storytelling, of narrative and stylistically too. It had been a real treat to participate it, to bring my game as much as take part in it. 'Coriolanus' has become playing in NY and La. It'll open in additional metropolitan areas on The month of january 20. [Photo: Weinstein Co.] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook

Watercooler: The Truly Amazing, unhealthy as well as the Glee
Matthew Morrison It is sometimes good, it is sometimes good, and frequently it's infuriating. Everything from week to week, Glee is certainly fun to check out...along with other people. Like consuming games, costly mobs and stonings, the musical is much better loved in groups, whether or not they have been in your couch, phone or Twitter feed. If the soars - since it did while using episode before its baseball hiatus - we gather 'round to sing its praises, marvel within the "return to form" and express simply how much all of us love the idea of Santana and Mercedes joining Shelby's group. When it's under awesome, since it was last evening, with people blah amounts which gruelingly overplayed gag about Brittany's reliance on Irish exchange student Rory like a leprechaun, we run ourselves ragged clowning around the program, bouncing bashes off one another as being a Sue-Burt showdown. But here's the main one factor: Good or bad, we'restill watching, tweeting, departing comments in most cases getting a lot of fun while using communal camaraderie. It's a rare series that could stop us entertained despite its defects. Exist huge holes inside the logic sometimes? Sure. Can we kind of hate Rachel, but love her voice? Sure, occasions a bazillion. And can we buy the idea of Quinn getting her baby back getting an easy call to Child Services? Not for just about any second. Still, there remains an allure to Glee that's inevitable. It's the TV just like a grab bag. You never know if you're gonna have the emotional thrill in the Artie-centric "Wheels," the dazzling stunt-theming of "The Power of Madonna" or perhaps the annoying Kurt-as-martyr spectacle of "Never Been Kissed." All we could really depend on is always that many of us are likely to be talking about this. And very, isn't that half the watching tv anyway? So consult with us inside the comments below. How About Brett Ratner Just Makes Beverly Hills Witch and Calls it Even?
We established long ago, well before Tower Heist was greenlit, that sorting out the many irons in Brett Ratner’s directorial fire is something of a fool’s errand. New projects seem to come and go from the filmmaker’s slate every day, with a few priority projects like Beverly Hills Cop IV hang on for dear life (their stars’ disinterest notwithstanding). And now you can add another “dream project” to the list. Per the NYT: Though he is committed to the Oscars and next plans to direct The 39 Clues, which [Jeff] Nathanson is adapting from the popular Scholastic adventure-book series, Mr. Ratner was busily conjuring up other future endeavors, including what he called his “dream project”: a film version of the Broadway musical Wicked. In response, perhaps, to the cocked brow of a reporter sitting opposite him, Mr. Ratner made the passionate case that he was ready to take on films that no one expected from him. “People who played it safe, they weren’t really going anywhere,” he said. “They did the same thing over and over again. I’ve always challenged myself, and whether I failed or not, I didn’t fail in my mind. I went through the experience, and it prepared me for the next time I’m going to do it.” Listen, I don’t experience the same kneejerk sourness a lot of people seem to suffer upon hearing or reading Brett Ratner’s name. The guy’s nice, he works hard, he’s ambitious, he’s enthusiastic, he employs people, and I really couldn’t care less how his X-Men movie stands up to those of Bryan Singer. I’d just like to offer a modest proposal for Ratner to not only scale down a bit, but actually combine his latest “dream project” with the old one — Beverly Hills Cop IV — to make something original and new: Beverly Hills Witch. This would basically take two exhausted concepts that nobody really wants onscreen and roll them into the perfect PG-13 starring vehicle for a Reese Witherspoon or Sandra Bullock, while leaving the barely breathing legacy of Eddie Murphy’s trilogy of diminishing returns and the stagebound grace of the hit Wizard of Oz spinoff to maintain their own finite cultural niches. There is more money and more audience and maybe even more franchise reckoning to be wrung from the tale of a upper-crust glambot who, upon mistreating a lowly Jamba Juice employee who secretly happens to be training for wizardry, is served one of the young conjurer’s experimental Hex smoothies. She and her appalled family soon find her developing warts that no cosmetic procedure can cure, and demonstrating class-contorting powers that not even the highest-society movers and shakers can withstand. Shunned by her status-conscious husband, her smug teenagers and an insufferable social circle, the woman reconnects with the young smoothie wizard for an antidote, only for both of them to find their powers are unbeatable when paired for good. It’s basically a recession-era morality tale with some sweet visual-effects opportunities and the chance for an A-list leading lady to showcase some comic chops in a possible franchise launch. And it avoids having to pretend patronizingly that there’s a market for the rehashes Ratner has in mind. Move on, son! Anyway, your mileage may vary! Other plot suggestions are more than welcome. Just make it worthy of Brett Ratner’s “dream project,” and you’re in! · Forget the Art House; He’s Making Blockbusters [NYT] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Sorry, Geeks: None of Avengers Was Shot on iPhone
After a torrent of reports circulated the news that Avengers DP Seamus McGarvey shot portions of the $200 million Marvel blockbuster with an iPhone, the cinematographer (and especially Disney) rushed to claim he was misquoted by something called the Irish Film & Television Network: “I mentioned that the iPhone and the Canon 5d Mk2 were devices currently used on many Hollywood productions. I used the Canon on some shots on Marvel’s The Avengers movie. Unfortunately, this was edited to read that I shot some of the film with the iPhone. This is not true.” Disappointing, but come on. Eastwood stays fresh with latest pic
Leonardo DiCaprio stars in J. Edgar.
Mengers In a moment when Hollywood is flailing about with tired remakes, Clint Eastwood, among its more senior filmmakers, appears more determined than ever before to stake new ground. His gripping new film "J. Edgar" may be the polar complete opposite of contemporary studio product -- a searing biopic in regards to a megalomaniacal right-wing ideologue.Under his four-decade reign, J. Edgar Hoover used the FBI to blackmail presidents and manipulate the media to mold his image because the nation's lone protector against gangsters and "Bolsheviks." Top political figures and reporters were scared to show that J. Edgar (fantastically performed by Leonardo DiCaprio) would be a mama's boy having a gay lover.Eastwood's picture opens November. 9, so I'm not likely to evaluate it here apart from to express it's in line with Clint's legacy. His protagonists really are a study in surprise -- cure would roam from Dirty Harry to Wally Kowalski (of "Gran Torino"), from Josie Wales to Nelson Mandela, in the military of Iwo Jima to some "Billion Dollar Baby."Request Clint about his strategy, and that he will, obviously, deny the presence of any. I'd a leisurely talk to him last weekend in Carmel, Calif. (he used to be the mayor), where he demonstrated his new film before buddies and neighbors in the Carmel Film Festival. "My existence is a number of accidents," Eastwood demands. When John Grazer first pointed out Hoover to him, he wondered why producer was thinking about vacuums. A peek at the fabric, coupled with a phone call from DiCaprio, spurred his interest. Dustin Lance Black was introduced aboard to create the script (he'd won an Oscar for "Milk") and remained using the film through production. The profile of J. Edgar is really a measured one. A driven guy who fought against very introducing science in to the untidy whole world of crime-busting, younger crowd was both callous and psychologically unstable.By comparison, Clint, age 81, appears as rock-solid and relaxed as always. He's a guy notoriously lacking of intellectual pretension. He steadfastly declines to intellectualize about his work. Indeed, his films appear to unfold as adventures in self-discovery. A libertarian by instinct, he is another humanitarian by character -- a profoundly decent and accessible guy who covets the "accidents" that comprise the ongoing development of his career.Inside a 2010 profile of Eastwood within the NYer, David Denby observed that "individuals who have been skeptical of Eastwood 4 decades ago (I am one of these) have lengthy since capitulated, upon the market or died. He's outlasted everybody." Speaking to Eastwood last weekend, I did not sense he would connect with Denby's remark. Rather, he appeared to regard themself like a filmmaker in mid-career who had been already planning his next film. And it wouldn't be considered a remake. There is an excessive amount of more to understand and explore.Recalling MengersLofty tributes were compensated to file a lawsuit Mengers a week ago, but more attention was handed to her parties rather than the numerous pictures she come up with. The fabled agent, who died a week ago at 79, had an instinct for nice material and was prepared to push, bully and cajole to obtain her deals closed.I remember when i sent her the very first draft of "Paper Moon," declaring that, "Vital developed it, I really like it however i can't persuade Peter Bogdanovich to consider it on or learn how to cast it." Not much later, Mengers was on the telephone, purring, "Don't be concerned, honey, I have got Ryan O'Neal and the daughter Tatum and I'll beat the shit from your friend Bogdanovich to direct it." Bogdanovich, it switched out, needed the beating, however the whole project joined together and would be a hit.Mengers put glitzy parties for celebrities and, on the way, paved the way in which for other energy-seeking women of her generation. The obits, however, brought to mind the brevity of her heyday. She would be a major pressure through the early '70s but losing her energy through the early 1980s. By age 54 she surrendered her energy base at ICM, serving briefly as leader from the William Morris Agency only to discover that, while major stars remained as accepting her party invites, they weren't willing to register again as clients.A few of her star clients found resent her forcefulness. Mengers was skeptical of Barbra Streisand's decision to direct "Yentl," and Streisand herself opposed Mengers' urgings to star inside a film to become directed by Mengers' husband, Jean Claude Tramont (a captivating stock picker but an unskilled director). Increasingly more, Mengers was growing weary of Hollywood's corporate making decisions and was activating the company in general. She spent her final years in relative seclusion but ongoing to ask her preferred couple of to her house. On the personal level, Mengers would be a gracious ally in my experience. She found my parties, assisted me come up with my pictures and, in the future, frequently dropped me notes of praise for my documents. She once even offered me a glancing hug on my small oral cavity, coming smoke during my face as she moved closer (it wasn't a Pall Mall). For Mengers, this was a astonishing show of love. It had been greatly appreciated. Contact Peter Bart at peter.bart@variety.com

Box Office Preview: 'Paranormal Activity 3' Expected to Open North of $30 Million
Paramount's Paranormal Activity 3 is expected to scare up strong business as it opens around the globe this weekend, while international box office hits Johnny English Reborn and The Three Musketeers move into North America.our editor recommendsGotham Award Noms Go to 'The Descendants' and 'Martha Marcy May Marlene'Paranormal Activity 3: Film ReviewMartha Marcy May Marlene: Film ReviewThe Three Musketeers: Film ReviewJohnny English Reborn: Film ReviewSUNDANCE REVIEW: 'Margin Call' Never Develops a Sense of Urgency Amid Financial CrisisSUNDANCE REVIEW: 'Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey' Pulls Back the Curtain on Iconic Character The fourth wide release of the weekend is Mighty Macs, a biopic of Cathy Rush, the Hall of Fame women's basketball coach who led her Catholic college team to the national championship in the 1970s. PHOTOS: Hollywood's New Leading Ladies The specialty box office sees two high profile titles enter the U.S. marketplace - Fox Searchlight's Martha Marcy May Marlene and Roadside Attractions' financial drama Margin Call. On Thursday, Martha Marcy picked up three top Gotham Award nominations, while Margin Call earned one. Submarine Deluxe opens Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey in one theater in NY. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, the film follows the puppeteer behind the beloved Sesame Street character. Box office observers expect Paranormal 3 - a prequel - to gross in the mid-$30 million range, which would put it behind the $40.7 million opening for Paranormal Activity 2 on the same weekend last year. PHOTOS: Sundance's Most Buzzed-About Films Paramount cites the overall downturn at the box office as the reason for projected lower opening, but says Paranormal 3 faces a distinct advantage in that there is no Saw installment to compete with this year. The Paranormal Activity franchise, produced by Jason Blum, Oren Peli and Steven Schneider, has been one of the most profitable film series in recent memory. The first Paranormal, which cost $15,000 to produce and opened in a limited run in September 2009, went on to gross $193.4 million worldwide. Paranormal 2 cost $3 million to produce, and grossed $177.5 million worldwide. The threequel, with a production budget is pegged at $5 million, also opens this weekend in numerous foreign territories. PHOTOS: Behind the Scenes of Sundance Earlier this week, Paramount hosted sneak screenings of Paranormal 3 in 20 cities across the globe. More often than not, moviegoers ages 18-25 were the core demo, while females turned in force. Neither Three Musketeers, distributed by Summit Entertainment, nor Universal's Johnny English Reborn are expected to be big players in their domestic box office debuts, despite their success overseas. Three Musketeers, costing $90 million to make and produced by Germany's Constantin Films, is expected to open in the low double digits at the domestic box office, and is tracking best among older males. Constantin financed the $90 million film, with Summit handled international sales, in addition to picking up U.S. rights. The 3D action-adventure has been a strong player overseas, with a cume to date of $48.2 million. This weekend, Three Musketeers continues to roll out overseas, including in Eastern Europe, Latin America and Asian markets. Both Paranormal 3 and Three Musketeers go out in north of 3,000 theaters domestically, while Johnny English Reborn, starring Rowan Atkinson, only opens in 1,551. While Atkinson has a huge following overseas, he's not as popular in the U.S. That's why Universal is only predicting a weekend opening in the $5 million to $6 million range (the original Johnny English opened to $9 million domestically). Johnny English Reborn is a runaway hit internationally, and is poised to jump the $100 million mark this weekend worldwide. It's opened No. 1 almost all of the 43 foreign markets where it's been released, and goes out in six additional territories this weekend, including France. Mighty Macs, starring Carla Gugino, opens in 975 theaters and will likely play best in America's heartland. Roadside Attractions is opening Margin Call, written and directed by J.C. Chandor, in 56 theaters in top markets across the country - as well as offering the film simultaneously on VOD. Some theater owners weren't crazy about the plan, but will likely receive a portion of the VOD proceeds (generally speaking, exhibitors are more lenient when it comes to indie films and day and date releases). Margin Call, which charts the 2008 financial meltdown, stars Kevin Spacey, Zachary Quinto, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Demi Moore and Stanley Tucci, and earned a Gotham Award nomination for best ensemble performance. Martha Marcy earned three nominations - best breakthrough performance for Elizabeth Olson, best ensemble performance and best breakthrough director for Sean Durkin. Searchlight acquired Durkin's psychological thriller at Sundance earlier this year, and will open the film in four theaters in NY and Los Angeles. Kathryn Bigelow's Bin Laden Thriller Moves Out of Controversial Pre-Election Slot
Kathryn Bigelow’s upcoming movie about the team of Navy SEALs who killed Osama bin Laden was originally set to debut right before election day 2012, prompting U.S. Rep. Peter King (R-NY) to call for an investigation of the extent of the Obama administration’s assistance to the project. Now, that point seems moot; Sony has rejiggered its release schedule so that the Mark Boal-penned picture will debut after the Presidential election, and possibly not until 2013. Then again, with today’s news of Muammar Gaddafi’s death, Obama might not need as much help raising the victory flag, pre-election. [NYT]

Joe Trippi on Why 'Moneyball' is A Lot More Like the Howard Dean Campaign Than 'The Ides of March'
The other day, Joe Trippi Tweeted he felt the Kaira Pitt baseball movie 'Moneyball' will be a better representation of Howard Dean's 2004 presidential campaign than next weekend's era 'The Ides of March.' It absolutely was an amazing observation for any couple of reasons: Trippi was Dean's campaign manager throughout the first sort Vermont governor's not successful election run in 2004 and -- more valuable -- 'The Ides of March' was partially inspired with the Dean campaign. Good play 'Farragut North' by former Dean staffer Love Willimon, 'Ides of March' follows an idealistic campaign worker (Ryan Gosling) who finds out the pros and cons in the political machine throughout the trail along with his candidate (George Clooney). Moviefone spoke to Trippi (who was simply an consultant to 'Ides' film author Grant Heslov) about his observation -- which was less about 'Ides of March' moving from the source material plus much more a great organization using questionable new tactics to win, only to have people tactics later replicated by rivals. Why are you able to condition that 'Moneyball' reminded you plenty of Dean campaign when compared to a movie good Dean Campaign? I'd just seen 'Moneyball' plus it was eerie simply how much it reminded me. It comes down lower to baseball, clearly, but it's really in what happens when somebody reduces the wall of techniques it definitely is been done. You will discover facets of people inside the figures I know, but it's not whatsoever in what resembles the Dean campaign. Whereas, personally, 'Moneyball' was pretty damn close that it felt want to be inside the Dean campaign. Exist still any parallels left in 'The Ides of March'? I heard items that I realize I mentioned. There's a line about "70-three Dems have run for Leader," and I believe that the fricking time. Which I mentioned it 18 billion occasions through the campaign. Things I am saying is always that you will discover elements. I don't think George Clooney or anybody wanted or believe it is in regards to the Dean campaign. Not necessarily the play, really, involved it -- for me. What exactly could it be about 'Moneyball' that reminds you many of the Dean campaign? With 'Moneyball,' all the institutions within the Democratic party -- all the institutional players there -- thought i had been insane. Believe it is a completely new system that was a fad and wouldn't work. Males on my own team thought i had been crazy -- like the coaches as well as the scouts. They thought i had been all crazy. They were always trying to make it happen the old way and thought i had been insane for trying to put the campaign together in different ways. The 20-game winning streak felt as being similar to once we were round the Sleep deprived Summer season tour. I'm not trying to really make it an exact, "Oh my gosh gosh, it's about us" bullshit. After which it couple of years later the Red-colored-colored Sox win doing just what people guy while using A's i did so. So Obama might be the Red-colored-colored Sox? The main one factor that rang the strict in my opinion might be the Red-colored-colored Sox owner [John Henry], within the finish, adopting Beane and proclaiming that the initial guy that reduces the wall of techniques it definitely is been done always arrives lack of bloody. Well, trust me: I realize just what meaning. It calculates the 2 movies that are out at this time around, one which comes nearest to supplying you with insight regarding the it absolutely was like inside the Dean campaign is 'Moneyball'... of the things that. I wouldn't have expected that. I didn't expect it. I visited the film and showed up in this area with numerous bad recollections. You've labored for John Edwards. You think 'The Ides of March' can be a better representation of the campaign. The idealistic guy that staffers uncover is not so idealistic later on? Yes it's true. What I'd say about 'The Ides of March': it'll an incredibly good job to become entertaining drama, but concurrently really using the mix pressure of idealism versus dirty, real-existence reality. It will that a lot better than any movie on politics that I've come across -- that is what that movie does. It captures just what it's want to be idealistically enamored along with your candidate: thinking included and, concurrently, getting everything at risk and you also can't believe you have made that decision. That you just increased to explore that. Can you see yourself in Ryan Gosling's character? That you just required to make credits for just about any guy who not meet his image? That's everyone who's are you currently a presidential candidate. That's a thing that happen to anybody who has existed any presidential campaign. That moment happens. Why did Obama win and Dean didn't? Can it be just as simple as "more incomeInch? The primary difference in lots of ways was the money. Like the Red-colored-colored Sox, it absolutely was the mix from the establishment as well as the new way. Basically: Obama was basically taking things that work. One factor that happened was -- you gotta understand, in 2003, there's no such factor as YouTube. Facebook was on a few college grounds. There's something such as 1.4 million blogs your entire day the Dean campaign was over there has been 77 million blogs your entire day Obama started. To ensure that they ought to still data and stats than Dean and also the males had. They need to tools than we required to do it. And it is not only Obama. The entire Democratic party -- now all of the Republicans -- do the identical items that got developed inside the Dean campaign. That is not saying they're also not applying every new trick that Obama trained everybody. But it's the identical factor with every team in baseball: This didn't change the sport, but what went lower could it be married people techniques with teams which in fact had whenever possible. It's the same factor: now everybody in politics does the stuff we did. But we managed to get happen because we was without the money John Kerry which males had, and then we required to develop an additional way to discover the money to compete. Which we did which we scared the shit in the of these, but we lost. college later, everybody's employing the same stuff i had been doing, however they have money. The little males i did so it, too, but it's no advantage any more. It's things because they are now. Beane stays in Concord, it doesn't matter. He's still just a little market synergy in the large team that visited school on him. This is when I start to see the synergy: You went facing things because they are, you've bloodied, and what went lower? They just steal it and proceed. Numerous people the situation is unbelievably the identical -- including, incidentally, throwing over my desk. Have presumptions happened if this happened in 'The Ides of March' or perhaps the play, it needs to are actually something you actually did? Inside the play, inside the second scene, Chris Noth [the campaign manager] is bopping the intern. The manager and press secretary gets the affair while using intern. We're there within the premiere and my partner is to apply me and that i must demonstrate to her that we never rested by getting an intern. Once I asked for Love, "Hey, dude, what's the deal with the manager doing the intern? Everybody thinks this is among the Dean campaign. Seriously, dude." Which he just examined me and goes, "Joe, it's fiction, there's lots that must occur inside a play over two several hours to keep everybody entertained." What's your grade for 'The Ides of March' and 'Moneyball'? I give them the identical score, but also for different reasons. I'd give them an eight. I rank most movies a five -- like, I'm disappointed and it is surprising I wasted money on that, the industry good deal nowadays. These were both two excellent movies. So, personally an eight is kind of a sizable deal. You'll be able to contact Mike Ryan on Twitter. Follow Moviefone on Twitter. Photo: The brand new the new sony Pictures
MIPCOM 2011: Steven Van Zandt Goes Norwegian in Bilingual Gangster Thriller 'Lillyhammer'
CANNES -- Just how far can non-English-language drama travel? All the way from Norway if the story is handled right, says Sopranos star Steven Van Zandt.our editor recommendsDavid Chase and Steven Van Zandt reunite for his 60s-set musical drama (exclusive)Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at HP Pavilion -- Concert Review The E Street Band guitarist, who played mob consigliere Silvio Dante for a decade in the HBO series, has picked the Norwegian-language gangster drama Lillyhammerfor his next TV project. And what's more, he is convinced it will reach a global audience. Set in Lillyhammer, the town with the lowest crime rate in Norway -- which in turn has the lowest crime rate in the world -- Van Zandt plays a Mafiosi who is sent to the near-wilderness territory when he enters the witness protection program. Van Zandt's dialogue in the Metronome-produced drama distributed by German player SevenOne International is in English, and the Norwegian characters speak to him in English as well. But all the other dialogue is in Norwegian and the eight-episode, hourlong series will premiere on Norwegian broadcaster NRK. The show has already been snapped up by Netflix, which has exclusive U.S. rights to the show, which aims to match the success of the Danish language thriller The Killing. "There was no doubt in my mind that it was going to travel. Right from the beginning we planned on it traveling, and it's going to travel," he said at a press conference in Cannes. The secret? Keeping true to its authentic Norwegian roots. "It's very Norwegian, and I feel very strongly about this. From the beginning, we were talking about how Norwegian we should make it, and I insisted that I wanted it to be as nuanced and particular and as authentic as possible," he said about protecting the local customs, quirks and settings that are key to the storyline. Van Zandt said he learned the value of protecting the detail and setting and authenticity of a series from watching New Jersey become internationally relevant twice in his lifetime -- first with Bruce Springsteenand then with Sopranos creatorDavid Chase. "They both did the same thing -- they found the most personal parts of New Jersey, the not-so-glamorous parts, the very particular parts. That's what ends up being extremely international and interesting. The Sopranoswould never have worked if it had been made in LA." In fact, so keen is the production company to keep the Norwegian sense of the project that they are refusing to allow a Killing-style U.S. remake. Lasse Hallberg, senior vp and head of creative content at Metronome Film & TV, said it was "out of the question." "We are part of [Elisabeth Murdoch'sinternational production company] Shine, a format company, so obviously they wanted to do a remake, but we said no. The format is not for sale," Hallberg said. Added Van Zandt: "There's no way you could do it. You can't transplant these characters. Without the setting, it just wouldn't work." OK Ratings Start For Fundamental steps The Chew
The Kids fans probably won’t be too happy relevant for this, but ABC Daytime’s new lifestyle program The Chew, which transformed the canceled ABC cleaning cleaning soap, launched to solid amounts yesterday. The foods-designed series came 2.5 million million audiences due to its premiere and 590,000 women 18-49. That was more than a year ago’s series premiere of CBS’ The Talk (2.2 million audiences, 568,000 women 18-49), which too transformed a extended-running cleaning cleaning soap. (The Chew did a lot better than The Talk debut inside the other women demos too). In addition, The Chew matched up up AMC‘s latest available weekly audience (for September 12-16) and beat the departing cleaning cleaning soap in women 18-49 (590,000 versus. 532,000). It exceeded AMC‘s 2010-11 season earnings in general audiences (2.5 million versus. 2.4 million) and girls 18-49 (590,000/.9 rating versus. 541,000/.8 rating). At a small part of the cost of the daytime drama, once the Chew doesn’t drop considerably, it'll improve ABC’s primary point here substantially. Ironically, the quantity of fascination with The Chew may have surpassed ABC’s own anticipation — I hear the show’s website crashed yesterday because it couldn’t handle the incoming traffic. Or it absolutely was die-hard AMC fans sabotaging their show’s alternative …

Peter Dinklage Says Hes Ready For Tyrions Political Leap In Game Of Thrones Season 2
By Jolie LashLOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Peter Dinklage is planning to return to the set of Season 2 of Game of Thrones a new man after his Best Supporting Actor Emmy win. When I get to my set on Tuesday, my trailer better be filled with green M&Ms, he joked, as he spoke to Access Hollywood on the red carpet at HBOs Emmys bash, alongside his very glowing pregnant and proud wife, Erica Schmidt. Dinklage, who won the Emmy for his role as Tyrion Lannister in Season 1 of the drama, is ready to go back to work and he promised some big changes for his character a fan favorite in Season 2. Its a really good season this season, he told Access. My character goes somewhere that he hasnt been before and Im not gonna say anything else, but its fun to see a character like Tyrion in the world, in the game the political game. He was on the outside of it and now hes on the inside. Its fun what happens. Tyrion has a new ally in Season 2 as he takes on his role as the Kings Hand a squire named Podrick Payne, played by Daniel Portman. I have a squire Hes only poured my wine so far, but hes very good at pouring wine, Peter said of the scenes the two have shot over in Belfast. I think thats a relationship that develops a bit as the show goes along, but were in the early stages of our relationship now, me and my squire. Readers of the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin know that Tyrions character has some major action in the second book, but so far the actor hasnt had to endure any grueling training on set to prepare. So far, not so much, but the first season I was thrown around a bit more than this season so far, Peter told Access. But you never know what they have in store. At the end of the season some things happen, but Im not gonna give anything away. As he hit the HBO party, which boasted a host of his fellow Game of Thrones stars in attendance, including producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister), Mark Addy (the late King Robert Baratheon), and Jason Momoa (the late Khal Drogo), Peter told Access what went through his head as his name was called at the Emmys. Well I looked at Erica to make sure it was real, cause its sort of like Wooh! The world sort of bends. The movie The Matrix its sort of like that and then I just got up there I didnt prepare anything, he said. I forgot to thank my manager, I forgot to mention my mom I thanked my dog sitter my priorities are a little screwy, but anyway, but I thanked my wife (turns to Erica). [No], I didnt thank you I said, Hey, whats up? Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. New Red Band Trailer For The Thing
RUN!We've had a couple of trailers for The Thing (the prequel to, er, The Thing), but now comes a "Red Band" variant with a little more blood 'n' killing, largely thanks to more footage featuring the creature. There are some relatively quick glances at the nasty beastie itself, but if you're looking to see the movie unspoiled (and assuming you haven't seen the original), you might want to skip the footage below. The Thing, of course, finds palaeontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) sent to the Antarctic to join a Norwegian research team that has discovered something odd lurking beneath the ice. When she arrives, she learns that they've stumbled on a crashed alien spacecraft that has been buried for thousands of years... one that contains a seemingly dead creature. But this being the prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 chiller, we all know it's not as dormant as they think. Soon, a simple tissue sample procedure awakens the critter and it gets to work killing off and replacing the people at the research station. Kate doesn't know who she can trust. Who is still human? She'll need to team up with pilot Sam Carter (Joel Edgerton) to survive...From the looks of this, creature's certainly in keeping with Carpenter's, even if it is now created through a blend of CG and physical work as opposed to the original's all-practical terror. Can the new film live up to the original? That's a bigger question, and one that will be answered when it creeps into our cinemas on December 2. Watch The Hangover 2 The Movie
